Paris, Prince Henri-Robert d'Orléans, count of
(1908-1999)
   pretender to the French throne
Born in Le Nouvion-en-Thiérache, Prince Henri-Robert d'orlèans, count of Paris was the son of Jean d'Orlèans, duke de Guise (1874-1940) and Isabelle d'Orlèans (1878-1961), both great-grandchildren of King louis-philippe. Prince Henri-Robert inherited the title "comte de Paris," which had been revived by Louis-Philippe. As claimant to the French throne, the count of Paris went into exile in 1926 upon the death of his uncle, Philippe, duke of orléans, whose demise made his father heir to the French throne, and settled in Morocco, then Algiers (1942), where he tried to remove Admiral François darlan and assume leadership of the Free French during the war. The opposition of the Americans, however, essentially stopped his plans after Darlan's assassination. The count of Paris returned to France in 1950, following the abrogation of the laws of exile for pretenders to the throne.
